9 Good Reasons for Bad Breath

Bad Breath (Halitosis) can have many sources.  Some you might not have thought of are listed below:

9 Reasons for Bad Breath

1.  Dehydration:  Saliva helps to hydrate the mouth and to remove food and bacteria that cause bad breath. Caffeine, spicy foods, cigarettes, medications, and sleeping all reduce saliva production.

Drinking a lot more water is very important.  Fruits like apples and pears help increase saliva production.  Celery, carrots, and cucumbers also promote saliva.

2.  Respiratory Tract Infections:  Colds and bronchitis cause greater mucus production.  Bacteria that cause bad breath feed on mucus.  A stuffy nose can lead to mouth breathing and dry mouth.

3.  Diet:  A combination of low carbohydrates and high protein can cause more fat burning and the production of ketones that lead to mouth odor.

4.  Sweet and sticky foods:  Bacteria thrive on sugar.  Candy and dried fruit can get stuck in your teeth.

5.  Bacteria on Your Tongue: cause odor.

Gently clean with a toothbrush or tongue scraper.

6.  Acid Reflux or Heartburn:  Digestive juices rising into your throat area can cause unpleasant odor.

Vegetables like broccoli and leafy greens are low in fat and sugar, so they produce less acid during digestion.  Ginger is a natural remedy for heartburn.  The fiber in whole grains like oatmeal can absorb stomach acid.  Reduce saturated and trans fats, and increase healthy fats by consuming foods such as avocados, flaxseed, walnuts, and olive oil.

7.  Cracks and holes in Teeth:  Trapped food can attract bacteria in your teeth.

8.  Tonsil Stones:  Clusters of debris from bacteria, dead cells, mucus, and food can solidify on the tonsils.

Gargle with salt water to help dislodge them.

9.  Ulcer:  The bacteria that cause ulcers can also cause bad breath.

Green tea has the antioxidant catechin which fights bacteria.

Remember:

Sugar free gum covers the odor and promotes saliva production.  Parsley, spearmint, cinnamon, and rosemary can also help mask mouth odors.

Oranges, melons, and berries have vitamin C to help heal damaged areas of the mouth and to reduce bacteria.

The high fiber content in fruits, vegetables, and nuts helps to clean the teeth and reduce bacteria.

Brush for at least two minutes at least twice a day. Floss everyday as well.
